Mrs. Geraldine ("Gerry") Joyner West, 89, a retired teacher, died March 29 in Durham, NC, in the care of Spring Arbor and of Duke Home Care and Hospice. She had been a resident of Williamsburg, VA, from 1981 to 2014.

A native of Isle of Wight County, VA, Mrs. West was the daughter of Paul and Martha Joyner. She was a 1943 graduate of Windsor High School, and a 1947 graduate of Longwood Teachers' College, with a degree in Business. She taught at Cape Fear Technical Institute, Wilmington, NC, and in the public schools...

Mrs. Geraldine ("Gerry") Joyner West, 89, a retired teacher, died March 29 in Durham, NC, in the care of Spring Arbor and of Duke Home Care and Hospice. She had been a resident of Williamsburg, VA, from 1981 to 2014.

A native of Isle of Wight County, VA, Mrs. West was the daughter of Paul and Martha Joyner. She was a 1943 graduate of Windsor High School, and a 1947 graduate of Longwood Teachers' College, with a degree in Business. She taught at Cape Fear Technical Institute, Wilmington, NC, and in the public schools of New Hanover and Harnett Counties before retiring in 1981 to Williamsburg, VA.

She was a member of Walnut Hills Baptist Church, Williamsburg, and previously of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, Zuni, VA. In Williamsburg, she was an active member of the Area Council of Garden Clubs, Holly Hills Garden Club, Heritage Republican Women, and a volunteer with the Hospice Guild.

She was the widow of E. M. West, Jr., professor emeritus in the Department of Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, who died in 1990. Mr. West served in the 97th Infantry Division during World War II.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna P. Life and husband Allan of Chapel Hill, NC; her son, David M. West and wife Diane of Richmond, VA; two grandsons, Justin R. Life of Boston, MA, and George A. Life and wife Christina Vega-Westhoff of Buffalo, NY; a sister, Mrs. Rachel Taylor of Jacksonville, NC; two nieces, Lynn McRacken of Jacksonville, NC, and Susan O'Connell of Virginia Beach, VA; and three nephews, Michael P. Taylor of Richmond, VA; and Ronald M. West and Donald T. West, both of Zuni, VA.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, April 2, 11 a.m., at Williamsburg Memorial Park, 130 King William Dr., Williamsburg, VA. Nelsen Funeral Home, Williamsburg, is in charge of arrangements.
